District students share center stage with New York's leaders

Five students lead the Pledge of Allegiance at Governor Hochul's State of the State address.

At a recent 'who's who' event for New Yorkers, five young attendees stood out amongst the distinguished crowd.

City School District of Â鶹ӰÒô students, through their participation in Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region, led the Pledge of Allegiance at Governor Cathy Hochul's State of the State address on Jan. 13.

Myliah Harvey (Pine Hills Elementary School), Isabella Fantroy (Pine Hills Elementary School),  Leilani Weldon (Thomas O'Brien Academy of Science and Technology), Natalie Hardy (Pine Hills Elementary School) and Jordan Breland (Thomas O'Brien Academy of Science and Technology) steered the civic tradition at The Egg in Empire State Plaza to a packed audience of members of the New York State Senate and Assembly, state-wide elected leaders, cabinet members and agency heads, judges, local leaders, invited guests and media.

"Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region did a fantastic job leading the Pledge of Allegiance at the State of the State today - confident, inspiring, and full of pride. It was a powerful reminder of the leadership and promise in our young people. Well done," wrote Assemblymember Angelo Santabarbara (R - Rotterdam) in a social media post following the speech.

Governor Hochul outlined 200 initiatives at the annual affair that her office hopes will make New York more affordable, keep New Yorkers safe and expand opportunity for all.

Congratulations to our amazing student leaders (featured in the photo above from left to right) on such a wonderful accomplishment. Considering Myliah (grade 3), Isabella (grade 4), Leilani (grade 5), Natalie (grade 4) and Jordan's (grade 5) present poise, don't be surprised when they become the featured speakers at an occasion like this in the future.
