During a unit on World War I, grade 8 took to the trenches - literally - during a social studies lesson.
Isabel Rutkey’s classes on Monday. After studying the military tactics involved, the students acted out land combat with paper grenades, replicated chlorine and mustard gas attacks, fled disease-carrying rodents and made peace with each other to recognize a 1914 Christmas Day ceasefire.
The experiential activity was an excellent way to simulate the life and combat conditions our troops faced along the Western Front.
