Exploring the mysteries of matter

Student working with slime during the chemistry lab

The chemistry lab is the perfect place to study things that crackle, ooze and fog!

This week our students dove into a with the guidance of our amazing Â鶹ӰÒô High chemistry teachers Anne Carroll, Cyrus Clark and Brady McDevitt.

Working in small groups, students rotated through various stations to grasp key concepts through experimentation with a variety of solids, liquids and gases.

For example, at the slime station, students saw firsthand how polymerization works by mixing glue, a polymer made of long chains of polyvinyl acetate molecules, with Borax, a compound responsible for linking the molecules together.

Students also were able to observe dry ice and learn about sublimation, the process in a substance remains chemically the same as it turns from a solid to gas. This was also the perfect opportunity for teachers to reinforce important lab safety tools and procedures.

As a fun point of connection, students watched the iconic scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy throws water on the Wicked Witch of the West. It turns out, she wasn't melting...she was subliming!

Not only was this lab fun and festive, it provided students with a dynamic learning experience to understand complex scientific concepts.
