UÂ鶹ӰÒô students lead college prep workshop

During the college application process, students typically receive guidance and coaching from parents, counselors and other trusted adults. On Monday, our seniors at Â鶹ӰÒô High had an amazing opportunity to add a fresh set of voices to the mix — current college students from the University at Â鶹ӰÒô!

Eight UÂ鶹ӰÒô students representing three different campus groups — AfroLatinx Student Association, Ignite At Â鶹ӰÒô and Brother 2 Brother — partnered together to create a presentation for our Falcons with important tips, advice and insights to consider when pursuing higher education. Students from Orly Contreras' Senior Symposium/African-Americans and Women in Literature class were invited to participate.

"I think it's really nice to have college students come and talk to us about their experiences," shared senior Jenia Doweary who hopes to attend Russell Sage College post-graduation.

Current lived experience can be such a valuable asset, and our seniors enjoyed hearing firsthand information about how to manage time, balance responsibilities and seek support when needed. There were plenty of opportunities to ask questions and dive deeper into topics of interest.

After the presentation, students completed a hands-on exercise designed to outline a side-by-side cost comparison of three different colleges and/or universities. Students utilized a spreadsheet to crunch numbers and gain important insights about costs, financial aid and debt.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our guest presenters from UÂ鶹ӰÒô, as well as College and Career Readiness Counselor Jennifer Quinn who helps make dynamic learning opportunities like this possible!
