Making mooncakes in Mandarin Chinese class

Student holding up mooncakes

Students in Hua Lin's Mandarin Chinese classes had the opportunity to learn about the cultural and historical significance of mooncakes in a last month!

Mooncakes are a traditional pastry eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival that feature intricate designs and are typically filled with a sweet-bean or lotus-seed filling. During their class activity, our students had the opportunity to roll the dough and utilize special molds to shape the mooncakes prior to baking.

In addition to learning about how the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated today, students studied the origins of this holiday that has been celebrated in China for over 3,000 years.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the Chinese calendar. This year, the festival took place on Sept. 25, but can happen as early as Sept. 7 and as late as Oct. 8, depending on the year.

Not only are our Falcons developing foundational language skills by studying Mandarin Chinese, they are gaining an important understanding of Chinese culture and traditions through their coursework here at Â鶹ӰÒô High!
